It's been a while since I told you of something coming up, and this one is a pretty big one….and I need your help.

Next Sunday night, May 15th, I am playing at Pink Ultralounge on 6th and pike in the pacific place building. I'm not sure if you've been there, but it absolutely gorgeous. They have hired a new person to run the talent, and they are having me play on their first night.

That night a booking agent for big name clubs is coming. If I do well, and people come out, this could be really good for me. It's kinda like the DJ version of a college talent scout watching an important game.

That night there is stand up comedy which starts at 7:30. Cover is $10 for that part, however I have a guest list that'll cover 100 people. If you want to go early, email me your name and your guests names and I'll put you on the free list.

The main event is where I need people. From 10pm onward there is no cover. Huge added bonus is the first drink is $2, and the rest all night are happy hour prices.

I play from 10pm-12, and the guest is DJ Ideal from LA from 12-2. Ideal is a great partner for the night, as he plays funky electro house and has lots of energy.

Details:
This Sunday May 15th
Guest list you for the comics from 730-10
free after 10pm
I'm on 10-12

https://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=206555479375257

***Please come out!***
What are the origins of the word "Okay" (OK) ?

I found this on a yahoo site, and it is very intersting. Since I have traveled a bit, it seems to me the third explanation (from worldwide words) seems to be the best IMO.

Original from here http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090902015822AAuKEzJ

***********

1839, only survivor of a slang fad in Boston and New York c.1838-9 for abbreviations of common phrases with deliberate, jocular misspellings (cf. K.G. for "no go," as if spelled "know go"); in this case, "oll korrect." Further popularized by use as an election slogan by the O.K. Club, New York boosters of Democratic president Martin Van Buren's 1840 re-election bid, in allusion to his nickname Old Kinderhook, from his birth in the N.Y. village of Kinderhook. Van Buren lost, the word stuck, in part because it filled a need for a quick way to write an approval on a document, bill, etc. The noun is first attested 1841; the verb 1888. Spelled out as okeh, 1919, by Woodrow Wilson, on assumption that it represented Choctaw okeh "it is so" (a theory which lacks historical documentation); this was ousted quickly by okay after the appearance of that form in 1929. Okey-doke is student slang first attested 1932. Greek immigrants to America who returned home early 20c. having picked up U.S. speech mannerisms were known in Greece as okay-boys, among other things.

http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?term…

H.L. Mencken once described "O.K." as "the most successful of Americanisms," an estimation verified by U.S. troops during the Second World War, who reported encountering the phrase all over the world. Of all the scores of theories (and sub-theories) as to the origin of "O.K.," the most widely heard traces "O.K." to the "O.K. Club," a political committee supporting Martin Van Buren's unsuccessful bid for the Presidency in 1840. The "O.K.," it is said, was short for "Old Kinderhook," Van Buren's nickname.

It appears that this theory is not so much wrong (the "O.K. Club" certainly existed) as it is incomplete. Chances are good the Van Buren's partisans would never have named their club "O.K." had the phrase not already been widely known as an abbreviation of "oll korrect," a humorous misspelling of "all correct." American speech in the early 1800s was awash in similar abbreviations, two of which, "N.G." ("no good") and "P.D.Q." ("Pretty Damn Quick"), are still heard today.

Ironically, while "O.K." didn't save Van Buren's campaign, the campaign gave "O.K." a new lease on life -- until then, it had never been as popular as a competing phrase, "O.W." (for "oll wright"). (By the way, before we start feeling too superior to the cornball 1800s, is "oll wright" really any worse than the "excuuuse me!" or "not!" fads of a few years ago?).

http://www.word-detective.com/back-q.htm…

OK is without doubt the best-known and widest-travelled Americanism, used and recognised even by people who hardly know another word of English. Running in parallel with its popularity have been many attempts to explain where it came from — amateur etymologists have been obsessed with OK and theories have bred unchecked for the past 150 years.

Suggestions abound of introductions from another language, including the one you mention. Others include: from the Choctaw-Chickasaw okah meaning "it is indeed"; from a mishearing of the Scots och aye! (or perhaps Ulster Scots Ough aye!), "yes, indeed!"; from West African languages like Mandingo (O ke, "certainly") or Wolof (waw kay, "yes indeed"); from Finnish oikea, "correct, exact"; from French au quais, "at the quay" (supposedly stencilled on Puerto Rican rum specially selected for export, or a place of assignation for French sailors in the Caribbean); or from French Aux Cayes (a port in Haiti famous for its superior rum). Such accidentally coincidental forms across languages are surprisingly common and all of these are certainly false. Many African-Americans would be delighted to have it proved that OK is actually from an African language brought to America by slaves, but the evidence is against them, as we shall shortly learn.

more........

http://www.worldwidewords.org/qa/qa-oka1…

Asker's Rating:

Asker's Comment:

Lol, at least I was right to think that there was some mystery about it, I always thought it must be an abbreviation, and that it originated in America, it seems most likely to be from the Greek word:)

A very special event I am producing...please come!

**Please feel free to forward**

Hello everyone! If you get a weird
confirmation automatically confirming your subscription, that is
normal -- you don't have to do a thing. I'm not sure it will happen,
but it might as the new host may require it.
As always, should you want OFF just hit the link at the bottom of the
email, and follow the unsubscribe directions. Nobody has left yet....I
hope it stays that way :-)
kisses,
diem
p.s. On a positive note, the new webhost is 100% green -- they use
renewable energy, and for any additional energy they buy carbon
offsets. I was with my parents and we were at the grocery store in the checkout line. I was a typical kid and couldn't stay still, so I kept walking over to the soda vending machine near the exit of the supermarket, pushed all the buttons and then ran back to my parents at the checkout. I kept doing this over and over trying to waste time and energy waiting for my parents to finish being checked out of the store.

One of the times while I was walking back from the vending machine towards my parents I noticed an old man in the checkout lane who smiled at me when I walked past. Once I got to my parents they had finished paying and were pushing the cart of brown grocery bags toward the store exit. As we passed the soda machine for the last time before we left, I pushed the "Dr. Pepper" button again like I had been doing repetitively. Only this time a can of Dr. Pepper came out of the machine! It was complete magic and I had the biggest smile on my face! My dad laughed at me while I grabbed the Dr. Pepper from the machine, clutched it in both my hands and started to walk out with my parents. As I held the Dr. Pepper I turned around and saw the old man at the checkout smile and wave one last time to me.

I'm 38 years old now, and I frequently think about that day and how I felt, especially when I use a vending machine. I only wish that I could somehow let that old man know that his little, almost insignificant action of dropping .35 cents in the soda machine for me still makes this 38 year old boy smile. I wish that I could tell him that I will always remember how happy he made me and that I have never forgotten him.

Akon Calls T-pain

Try not laughing....and snoop with the "butternut reduction"? The event will be amazing -- it's being advertised all over San Diego, and features artists/band Soul In The Machine. I am flying down early (I can't wait to see my old town again), however I have a friend in Seattle who is actually driving the 1,249 miles. He is looking for a co-pilot who will split gas. This means you international peeps!

I am putting together a large-scale gobal benefit for Burners Without Borders, and I am looking for help. The positions will be very similar to these: http://vdaym.com/page5/page5.html

Interested? contact me offlist :-).

This is the original announce below:

Greetings!

You are invited to participate in a fantastic project, BENEFIT Without Borders, a one-day, multinational event to support BURNERS Without Borders' (BWB) projects around the world. We are hoping you will join us in this opportunity to build community by involving your city/region.

What is the history of Benefit Without Borders?

Jon Ray was one of the many volunteers who went to help out in the first incarnation of Burners Without Borders' efforts after hurricane Katrina. In November of last year, Jon led a volunteer team that produced a BWB fundraiser (www.bordertownsd.com) in San Diego. It went fabulously! Jon and his crew raised around $3500 after expenses!!!!

After an inspired discussion, an idea was born to produce a multi-city BWB benefit. The goal? To connect all of these events together by broadcasting each city's event to one another all on the same day. With six cities and counting, we are in the process of recruiting new locations and laying the groundwork for what is sure to be an amazing day! We need people like YOU to step up and involve your city/region.

How does it work?

-- The event is July 18th, 2009.

-- It can be a small house party, a private event space gathering, or a large scale outdoor event.

--One of the main activities tying these events together will be the silent auction.

--Resources for the three types of events with basic budgets, structure, and ideas will be available for use on the google group (see below).

--On the event discussion list, there are many ideas being shared which will help facilitate events of all sizes.

Thank You to the following cities for signing on: Oahu, San Diego, Seattle, Monterey, and Chicago.

With the recent addition of Toronto, we are now officially a multinational event!

Why should I support Burners Without Borders?

Burners Without Borders is a grassroots, volunteer-driven, community leadership organization whose goal is to unlock the creativity of local communities to solve problems and bring about meaningful change. Founded by Burners (Burning Man participants) who instinctively gathered after Hurricane Katrina to help those who couldn't help themselves, BWB has grown into a dynamic, international, volunteer organization made possible by the generous financial support of the community and an army of highly creative volunteers.

This past year alone, Burners Without Borders welcomed over 400 volunteers from all over the world to Pisco, Peru to support earthquake reconstruction efforts there.
BWB is constantly engaged in new projects that make a real difference, and their ability to be effective depends largely on donations to buy the materials needed to get the job done.

This is where we can help! Come out and support them for this multinational event on July 18th. Bring all of your friends!"

BWB's extremely low overhead means that any money donated goes directly to projects that make a difference. All donations to Burners without Borders are tax-deductible via their fiscal sponsor, The Black Rock Arts Foundation. Net proceeds of the Benefit Without Borders events will be donated to Burners Without Borders, with only a small percentage going to BRAF for accounting costs.

You can check out what BWB has been up to at www.burnerswithoutborders.org.

How can I get involved?

Involve your region in a benefit for BWB in your local area! By joining us for Benefit Without Borders, you will help rally your local area and help build community at the same time. We need YOU to step up to the plate and make this event a day to remember. You will have the support along the way from many other communities to make this day a success.

Where can I find out more?

Check out the details at: www.benefitwithoutborders.com If you want to *attend* an event in your areas, this is place for you! This site is in its infancy, so please check back often for new information.

If you want to assist in *running* an event in your area, you can sign up for the planning list here to stay in the loop:

http://groups.google.com/group/bwb-benfit (Yes, "Benfit". It's an old Arson Island throwback.) The google group is for the specific purpose of planning the events, and is for information and exchange of ideas with a specific twist on production.

Please join us on July 18th to connect the energy and creativity of your local community to this global event.

Kisses,

diem//regional emeritus, and lover of BWB

http://burnerswithoutborders.org/event.2009-01-29.8033323464

   /\ /|

   \ V/

   | "")

   / |

  / \\

*(__\_\

3. A few weeks back was the grand opening. If you are in Seattle, you should check it out!

   /\ /|

   \ V/

   | "")

   / |

  / \\

*(__\_\

4. Stupidly sick breakbeats from Haaps, my favorite superhero lawyer dj.

Scott Haapala, aka Haaps, just put the finishing touches on "Natural Selection", his latest effort. It is pretty amazing, and the face melting beats are awesome. You know those mixes where you can't even tell there was a transition? That can be done by beatmatching and layering, the most common way, or the other way, by not only beatmatching and layering, but by changing the entire sound at the same time. This is really, really, REALLY hard to do, and when done right, it makes for a far superior mix. Happs filled the whole freakin' disc with Type 2 mixes. I am in awe. Make sure to PLAY IT LOUD. It's a hearty blend of dark beats, and moves on to break-hop. I want him at my next house party.

Also, should you find yourself in need of a lawyer on the east coast, he's awesome.

Here is a direct link for the wav file: http://themidnightsons.com/aud/haaps/Natural%20Selection.wav

If you want mp3 action all sliced and diced by track, wait a few days then go here: http://themidnightsons.com/page2/page4/mixhaaps.html

   /\ /|

   \ V/

   | "")

   / |

  / \\

*(__\_\

5. Giant spider invades Liverpool and fails to eat the soccer team

So, I am fan of art in all forms, but my favorite is giant art. Especially giant freakin' spiders controlled by thirteen French guys who only use levers to move it. You really, really ought to click this link -- it's good for your health:

http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/2009/02/la_princesse_in_liverpool.html

   /\ /|

   \ V/

   | "")

   / |

  / \\

*(__\_\

6. diem wants to rock your body...

I want to play for you! Each month you get two lighters with heavy duty vinyl stickers of graphics made by Jeff Larson, one of my favorite artists. For you international folks (especially my Australian and Canadian subscribers), I pestered Jeff into making an international option -- so he will mail you stickers for $35.95 for the whole year! Seriously cool art, yo, and in your price range.

From Jeff:

Thank you for being a Lighter of the Month Club member.
It's been a whole year, and it's time to sign up again.
And remember, even if you don't smoke or just quit, these stickers can go on just about anything.

Because the lighters are my biggest production cost I've had to restructure the pricing system.
The PICK-UP-POINT membership (real lighters) is more expensive at $49.95 / year.
But the STICKERS-BY-MAIL option is now cheaper, only $29.95 / year.

As an added incentive to renew, there's a special offer this week that gets you a t-shirt with one of our most popular designs.
Please take a look at the following attachments for all the details, then go to www.lighterofthemonthclub.com to sign up.
-Jeff

   /\ /|

   \ V/

   | "")

   / |

  / \\

*(__\_\

8. Giant House for rent -- next door!

The house next door to us is for rent! It is a giant house, roughly 2600 sq ft. It is two stories, has five bedrooms, of which three are downright HUGE. It has a killer view of Seattle, and is available right now! You can call Theresa at 206-683-8731.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://www.bunnygroove.com/9/blog.php?id=6562402208047314936' title='[diem's list] lawyer dj's? giant spiders? It's on ebay for $150k, and would look fabulous in my house next to my pirate ship painting :-)

Here's his story in case ebay cuts the listing:

The Artwork
You´re bidding on an original artwork of world-famous street artist Banksy which was sprayed on a wall on Mona Road, Kingston, Jamaica, by the artist during a visit to the island in the year 2004. It is roughly 60 inches by 55 inches and about 7 inches thick. It weighs approximately 2000 pounds. Done by the artist in 2004 on Mona road in Kingston, Jamaica.
If you have any questions at all please contact us (mail@afflictedyard.com). Shipping (to any country but Jamaica) for the wall to your door will be roughly $10k. This is the artcoup of the year.

The Story
It was a non-eventful day when he actually drew them. He bought some construction paper from a local pharmacy and cut the stuff out. Then he drew this stencil of a girl on an exterior wall and some rabbits on the inside the pub itself. I kind of just stood there taking his picture because it was something to do. I had already captured his face back at Buju’s studio where he had done some other stuff so this was just extra. I didn’t really think much of it. I mean I live in a place where people get shot for marking up people’s walls (usually with a paintbrush), so a few sprayed stencils on the wall of a pub didn’t strike me as particularly interesting.
Later when I heard how much his stuff was selling for, I contemplated going back and chopping the wall down. It was there for years and I’m sure I’m not the only one who thought about doing it. Mona road is heavily travelled by a lot of foreign students on their way to the university so people from all over the world would often mention it, but nobody ever took the steps to cut it down…till this last August when I got a email from someone asking about my knowledge of the locations Banksy had tagged. That’s when I figured I should probably go get it before someone else did.
The wall is the last remaining tag that he did in Jamaica that can be seen in public. It’s also the only remaining stencil that has the tag BANKSY on it. The other ones were:

* A bridge in Charleton gully which was painted over.
* A rusting old ship near the airport (a stencil of a skull, crossbones and the signature ‘Banksy’has since faded)
* Buju Banton’s studio in Kingston (where there is another ‘balloon girl’ and some flying insects).

The wall is 60 inches by 55 inches and about 7 inches thick. It weighs like 2000 pounds though that is just a guess. I spent the day getting a bunch of drunk guys to cut it down and raise it onto a flatbed truck tied to one of those sealtbelt-type industrial straps. I was amazed that it didn’t smash to pieces which would have really been an incredible waste of energy and patience. All the guys in that video (including me) had no real idea how to cut the thing down (much less move it) and were completely impaired by the time we actually got it tied to a backhoe (borrowed from a nearby construction site). Ironically, the damn thing almost fell on me in which case there would be a much funnier headline : 'Jamaican who revealed Banksy killed by falling artwork'.

Hey Fatty!

Got your attention with that, eh? A few years back a good friend went to weight watchers and she lost quite a few pounds, and kept it off. Seeing her looking solidly awesome made me think about losing weight. Time passed...

Next, my wife lost a few as she wanted to look great for our wedding, and boy, did she ever. More time passes...

After several visits to my doc, he tells me I absolutely have to lose weight or else I will no longer be borderline for diabetes type two, I *will* have it.

Fast forward to another friend who lost nearly 70 pounds. She showed me her "fat" pictures, and said how weight watchers helped her. She has kept off weight for nearly 4 years now....more time passes.

Finally, the last straw, another friend loses weight, and is actively attending meetings. She will go to our meetings instead of where she has been going. And with this...game on.

I went to my first meeting, and they provided me a point calculator, a basic list of foods, and an intro into this whole thing. It has been wonderful thus far, and they have taught me SO much. I have been religiously tracking my foods since Friday morning, and already I feel better. I also don't feel hungry in the least -- it's interesting to see what I have been putting in ye olde body all these years.

You know how in some job interviews they like to ask you in tests whether or not you're the kind of person who would like to go parachuting? The camp included tents and
a huge shade structure which served as the community center. ArtEAST
shared their home with Burners from New Zealand, Holland and Ireland.
ArtEAST's theme camp was encircled by 100 feet of blank canvas on
which the Burning community shared their talent, enthusiasm and
messages.
On display at artEAST's gallery at UP Front are the impressive results
of this open experiment with canvas, paint, and a bevy of artists both
professional and amateur who braved the harsh conditions of the Black
Rock Desert in the name of creative exploration. These thirty-five
collaborative pieces inspire us all to embrace the spirit of living a
fuller life.
artEAST & UP Front [art] Gallery
48 Front Street North
Issaquah, WA 98027
425-392-3191

************************************
Georgetown Art Attack
Georgetown monthly art walk, held on the second Saturday of each month
from 6-9pm, reflects the industrial-strength character of the
neighborhood. For more information stop into Georgetown Records at the
corner of Vale and Airport way.
(Ed. -- It's this Saturday, and you can see http://www.georgetownartattack.com/
for a map **BUT KEEP IN MIND THAT SITE IS ONE MONTH BEHIND.**)

************************************
Hi friends,
The Winter Solstice Festival that had to be postponed due to too much
Winter is now scheduled for THIS WEEKEND! The weather report looks
much better - though still a little chilly so dress warm and bring
good friends to huddle with. There may be some sprinkles on Sunday -
that won't stop us but you may want to stick an umbrella in your
pocket. If you're able to join us for this fabulous and free family
event, I promise you a spectacular start to your new year!
http://www.seattlecenter.com/news/detail.asp?ME_MediaNum=1448
NEW DATES: Jan. 10 and 11, 4pm – 9pm
International Fountain and Fisher Pavilion Lawn, FREE
Winter winds and snow put a damper on our original Winter Solstice
Fire Festival plans and led to a rescheduling of this spectacular
Seattle Center Winterfest premiere.
Please join us in January for this fiery festival on its new dates.
You'll marvel at the constellation of glowing steel structures set
afire while local artists offer words, music and movement articulated
with flames. They will illuminate the darkness and transform the
International Fountain and Fisher Pavilion Lawn into stunning
celestial wonders.
Willow

From my original message:
Hi Everyone,
It's that time of year again – the sun sleeps longer and longer each
night and we turn to other means to find light and warmth, and I am
again privileged to be involved in an amazing collaborative fire
performance. Solaris brings together fire performers from all over
the Puget Sound as we fill the part of the Sun and light up the night.
What started as a single performance telling the story of the planets
and seasons has grown this year to include even more amazing fire
artists. Sculptures and additional performances will carry the light
even further into the night. Please join us for one of two amazing
evenings (or both!) that your whole family will enjoy. My group will
help kick off the evening in the Orbis / Solaris performance at 4 and
I highly suggest sticking around to see all of the performances -
especially IGNITION – you will NOT be disappointed.
Willow
Winter Solstice Fire Festival
Part of Seattle Center's Winterfest 2008
Saturday, Jan. 10, 4pm – 9pm
Sunday, Jan 11, 4pm – 9pm
International Fountain and South Fountain Lawn
FREE!
http://seattlecenter.com/programs/detail.asp?EV_EventNum=57
The Winter Solstice Fire Festival, a spectacular Winterfest premiere,
radiates flames and fiery drama. Towering steel infernos will
illuminate the darkness, along with dynamic movement and music – all
to celebrate the Solstice return to light.
The spectacle begins at 4pm with a performance recognizing the Winter
Solstice. Orbis and Solaris create a dynamic outdoor performing art
installation that weaves together words, movement, music, fire
performances and large luminaries to transform the Seattle Center
International Fountain into a stunning celestial wonder.
At the conclusion of the performance, around 5pm, the sculptures in
the open spaces around the International Fountain will be illuminated;
and throughout the evening, fire performances by local artists will
entertain as audiences take in the brilliant works.
This collection of fiery sculptures includes some dramatic, organic,
inspired forms:
Fire-Pod
Created by Mark "Buphalo" Tomkiewicz.
www.fire-pod.com
Pnuema
An organic kinetic fire sculpture by San Francisco artist Charles A.
Gadeken
Water Candle
A 6-foot tall water fountain, created by Chris Piper - based out of
Oregon.
www.fireartistry.com
PyroBeat
Also by Chris Piper
www.fireartistry.com

Participating performing artists include:
Open Flame Dance Theater - 5:30pm on the Fisher Pavilion Roof
www.openflamedance.com
Pyrosutra - 6:30pm at the International Fountain
www.pyrosutra.com
Spinergy Arts - 7:30pm on the Fisher Pavilion Roof
www.spinergyarts.com
IGNITION - 8:15pm at the International Fountain
Winterfest is presented with generous support from Seattle Center
Fund, Starbucks Coffee Company, Seattle's Child and the City of Seattle.

************************************
http://www.misssolarsystem.com/
"Seattle trio Miss Solar System are versatile electronicists who
channel song structure and Miranda Rose's dramatic diva vocals through
drum 'n' bass, funky-breaks, and downtempo frameworks.
